Explore with an expert guide and enjoy stories about the Timucuans and the important role the river, forest and ocean played in their everyday lives. See a 1500’s Timucuan Camp complete with living history and experience the food, clothing and shelter of these amazing people first hand.

Exploration Day For Kids

exploration-day-for-kids1The Department of Environmental Protection’s Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park is celebrating National Parks and Recreation Month. Maclay Gardens invites kids ages 5 to 12 to enjoy a day of exploration in the park. As we investigate the buildings and gardens, we will learn about the Maclay family children and how different life was in their day. The kids will tour the Maclay House and learn about the activities the Maclay children did, the animals they had and the chores they may have had to do. We will make believe we are living in the days of the Maclay family; doing, seeing and hearing the things they might have. Kids will use their imaginations to learn about history, the Maclay family and the park.

Swingin In The Suwannee Social Dance

swingin-in-the-suwannee-social-dance1Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park in White Springs will host the Swingin on the Suwannee social dance on Sat. 18 July 2009. The event will open with a free group lesson taught by nationally recognized instructors Hubert Baxter and Ashleigh Buhler at 6:00. Open dancing will begin at 7:30 and last until 11:30. The music will be a mixture of country, west coast swing and a little ballroom mixed in for the flavor! The dance will be held in the parks main auditorium building. Admission is $10 per person for the evening. Park admission is included so come early or stay the night at the park! Refreshments will be served but remember no alcoholic beverages are allowed in the park.

Golden Stories By The Silver River

golden-stories-by-the-silver-riverDueling Storytellers compete for the favor of the audience and for a chance to win the ‘Golden Log of Story.’ July’s theme is ‘Stories about Everyone’s Favorite Creatures: Insects.’ Depending on the number of tellers participating, there may be time for an ‘open mic.’ If you are interested in sharing a story, be sure it is no longer than 5 minutes, is family friendly and is on this month’s theme. Program starts at 7 PM under the large pavilion and typically runs about 90 minutes. Insect repellant suggested.

2009 Lake Louisa Sprint Triathlon Series

There are two divisions, elite (draft legal) and Age-Group (non-drafting). Elite athletes must pay cash on race day ($30). Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park will host an Americana Santa Painted WindowWorkshop on Monday, July 13, 2009 from 2:00 am till 4:00 pm.

Taught by folk artist, Janet Moses, in this workshop, you will learn how to transform an old cast-off window into a wonderful hand-painted work of art. You will recycle the window into a decorative keepsake that you will treasure for years to come. Your creativity is limited only by your imagination. All levels of crafters will enjoy this workshop.

Workshop fees are $35.00 per workshop, including park admission.
