Charming Tarpon Springs

May 4, 2013

Right off US 19, heading west on Tarpon Ave. in less than 1 mile you will soon step into a little Greek town called Tarpon Springs also known as “The Venice of the South”.   This town was incorporated in 1887 and is the oldest city in Pinellas County.  Tarpon Springs has plenty of parks, brick roads, delicious food, boutiques, antiques shops…

In general, it has it all that you can think of a quaint old town.  Just the perfect scenery for a splendid and fulfilling day.   Tarpon Springs’ unique attraction is the Sponge Docks which is at the heart of the city’s Greek Town.  This area was settled by Greek Fishermen in the early twentieth century.  The Sponge Docks is actually registered in the National Registry of Historic Places.

Tarpon Springs is also known as an art destination bust mostly known for its annual Epiphany Celebration in which young men dive in for a cross thrown in the Spring Bayou. As it is for me, I enjoy the antique shops and the fabulous food along the way.  Special mention to Currents Restaurant for the amazing dining experience;   Hella’s Cafe for its excellent coffee and delicious Greek pastries, and Rusty Bellies for Tarpon Springs’ freshest seafood and outside bar with live music.  OPA!
