September 17, 2009

florida-aquarium-11Tampa, Fla. (Sept. 17, 2009) – The Florida Aquarium is pleased to announce it has solidified its presence as a cornerstone and asset in downtown Tampa for 30 additional years as it agrees to the new management contract presented by Mayor Pam Iorio to City Council today.

“Our partnership with the City of Tampa has been, and will always be, vitally important to The FloridaAquarium,” says Thom Stork, president and CEO of the Aquarium. “Great cities have great cultural assets and Tampa is no different. We are proud The Florida Aquarium was one of the first in downtown and we will continue to grow this asset for both our residents and visitors.”

Consistently ranked as one of the top 10 aquariums in the country for the last five years, The Florida Aquarium continues to improve the experience it offers to its guests while finding ways to reach out and give back to the community. Each year 100,000 school children and 1,000 teachers reap the benefits of excellent marine science education programs. The aquarium is seeking to grow that number through expanded education space in a new two-story addition.

Through Conservation and Research programs, the aquarium is constantly involved in programs that help Florida including sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation, injured and orphaned river otter rehabilitation, coral propagation, Civil War shipwrecks, coastal underwater clean-ups, wild dolphin ID program, red-tide surveys and fish counts. All while entertaining more than 750,000 guests per year with unique interactive and educational programs.
