South Florida’s tourism decline worsened in January, despite hopes that new hotel rooms and a college football championship would provide relief from the worst travel market since the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Occupancy rates dropped throughout the region compared to a year ago, even as hotels cut rates to fill beds, according to numbers from Smith Travel Research.
