It’s a pre-dog days sale at Gatorland, the longtime attraction that features gator wrestlin’, the Gator Jumparoo (mmm, chicken) and an expansive breeding marsh with observation tower. August 8 Event To Feature Japanese Folk Dancing, Taiko Drumming, Floating Illuminated Lanterns, an Awe-Inspiring Fireworks Display and More!!

Delray Beach – July 16, 2009 – Inspired by Japan’s three-day Obon holiday honoring the spirits, The Morikami’s 32nd annual Bon Festival packs all of the celebration’s excitement into one fun-filled evening. Being held from 5-9 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, the festival will follow the holiday’s tradition of remembering ancestors and thanking them for the living’s quality of life with cultural activities, entertainment and food, as well as a sea of illuminated lanterns and fireworks.

The event, which draws audience members from across the country, will feature taiko drum performances by Fushu Daiko, a street fair with games, traditional Japanese folk dancing, American & Japanese cuisine, and the Kirin Beer Garden.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium to Help Release Rehabilitated Dolphin
Event will Provide Rare Photo/Video Opportunity

Staff from Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA), Gulf World Marine Park and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute plan to release rehabilitated Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, Dunham. CMA staff rescued Dunham from Anclote Key Island in December 2008. CMA staff will monitor Dunham’s progress through the use of a VHF transmitter for two months after the release. This will help provide researchers with important information about his progress and travels.

Rare Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle at Mote for Rehab After Swallowing Balloon

An endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys kempii) has been brought to Mote’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital after it swallowed a balloon — an episode that we hope will remind residents and visitors to stow their trash carefully.

The 3.3-pound young turtle washed up on a sandbar near the south end of Lido Key on Tuesday, July 14, with what appeared to be fishing line hanging from its mouth. Concerned swimmers called Mote biologists, who brought the Kemp’s ridley to Mote’s Sea Turtle Hospital.
