depLAKE BUENA VISTA – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Central District office today hosted the 13th Annual Power Generation Conference at Walt Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort & Conference Center in Lake Buena Vista. The one-day conference, featuring the power generation industry, government and other stakeholders, focused on alternative energy sources, carbon reduction, and emerging trends and technologies related to climate change.

The Dig the Beach Series has partnered with USAV to bring a national event to the east coast. Now there is no need to head out west… Stay home and play against the best. We have some of the best talent in the country. This is a premiere national invitational event which will ensure top level competition. Teams from around the country will eventually have to come and want to compete for the East Coast Beach Nationals Championship! If we build it they will come! Lets make them come here and lets defend our sand!!!

Dunham, The Dolphin Attacked By Sharks

Sad News from Clearwater Marine Aquarium

dolphin-attackedThere has been an incident regarding Dunham, the dolphin who was released this morning. Several hours after being released, he was attacked by sharks and after determining the extent of his injuries, veterinarians humanely euthanized Dunham to reduce his suffering. His injuries were so extensive that he would not have survived. Heroic efforts were taken to support him in the water after the attack, but his injuries were so severe that he would not have survived.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium Helps Release Dunham the Dolphin

release-dunhamThis morning, staff from Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA), Gulf World Marine Park and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute released rehabilitated Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, Dunham. He was released shortly after 8 a.m. at the Dunedin Causeway and immediately found two other dolphins to swim with. CMA staff rescued Dunham from Anclote Key Island in December 2008. CMA staff will monitor Dunham’s progress through the use of a VHF transmitter for two months after the release. This will help provide researchers with important information about his progress and travels.

Maclay Gardens State Park invites the public to come out for a morning presentation by Julie Neel, a well known butterfly gardener from South Georgia. Wouldn’t you like to have a beautiful garden and at the same time attract winged jewels? Julie truly enjoys educating the public about ways to attract butterflies to their gardens. She is a wonderful southern lady who has for years shared her joy of Butterfly Gardening with others. Southern Living magazine once referred to her as, “Georgia’s Butterfly Lady.” This workshop will take place at the Gardener’s Cottage.

Learn the importance of historic preservation and the measures the Florida Park System takes to preserve and protect our cultural resources. See how archaeologists uncover the truth about early Floridians and how they lived. What did they use to hunt the meat that they ate, how did they protect themselves from preditor or their enemies? Come spend this early summer morning cooling off in the Civic Center while discovering some of the behind scenes activities at the Florida State Parks. After the program take the family on a walk through the gardens and the ravine trails. Discover and enjoy the parks beautiful cultural resources and rediscover …the Real Florida.
